CITY OF LAWRENCE/UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS TRANSIT FACILITY
Lawrence, Kansas

The University of Kansas requested proposals for the development, design, and construction of a Transit Facility that would be used and shared by the KU Transit System and the City of Lawrence Transit System.  Mar Lan Construction responded to this request by teaming with Advanco, Inc, and the project was awarded to the Mar Lan/Advanco team.

The project consists of an 18,000 square foot building with administrative offices, dispatch, driver training area, parts and fluids storage areas, service bays for 6 buses, and an enclosed drive-thru wash bay for busses.  The bus wash utilizes a reclaim water system that recycles and reuses 80% to 90% of the water used for bus washing.

The site provides parking for 100 buses and transit vehicles with an on-site fueling station that delivers both bio-diesel and gasoline.  The 13-acre site has 160,000 square feet of 8” thick concrete paving in the drive lanes and bus parking areas.  The pavement section was designed specifically for this application and utilizes fly ash stabilization of the subgrade and granite aggregate for durability.  Runoff from the bus parking area passes through a landscaped bioswale to help purify the runoff before it is introduced back into the natural aquifer.
